Former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has returned to the political spotlight after several weeks away on holiday, launching a sharp attack on the Tisza government over fuel prices, the budget deficit and rising public debt.

Fidesz attacks government’s economic record
Orbán’s remarks came alongside criticism from the Fidesz parliamentary group, which accused the Tisza government of delivering a poor economic performance since taking office. According to Fidesz, Hungarian families are currently facing the highest fuel prices seen so far this year, placing additional pressure on household budgets.
The parliamentary group also pointed to what it described as a rapidly worsening budget deficit and growing public debt, arguing that the combination of higher fuel costs and deteriorating fiscal indicators represents a serious burden for the population.

Warning over public debt
Fidesz claimed that the government’s economic management had been characterised by a series of negative records, with both household costs and key macroeconomic indicators moving in an unfavourable direction. The opposition party argued that rising public debt and a larger state budget deficit could threaten Hungary’s economic stability over the longer term.
Orbán’s brief intervention echoed those concerns, framing the economic situation as a return to the threat of “debt slavery” — a phrase frequently used in Hungarian political discourse to describe excessive public indebtedness and dependence on external financing.
The former prime minister did not provide further details or figures in his post, instead delivering a concise political message focused on the three issues he presented as the main economic problems facing Hungarians: fuel prices, the budget deficit and public debt.

People are not that stupid that they don’t realize that Fidesz is responsible for the public debt they ran up over the past 16 years. It’s absolutely ludicrous to point fingers at a party that only took office in May. Orban is the biggest liar, biggest thief and biggest betrayer of Hungarian security Hungary has ever seen since the fall of communism.

I said here numerous times that to vote for Toroczkai László was to vote for complete sovereignty; that to vote for Orbán was to vote partial sovereignty; and that to vote for Magyar was to vote for no sovereignty. Hungarians were extremely clear that they were not interested in sovereignty, but, rather, in a more manageable financial life.
