We can see which cities were best at obeying the restrictions following the COVID-19 outbreak by using the location information of smartphones.

According to Qubit, Google has been monitoring these data for weeks and made an overview of their findings and statistics, which anyone can download.

Google can monitor the traffic on certain roads by their users’ locations, this is how Google Maps knows, which route is quicker, or how Waze knows when there is a traffic jam, not only that, but they also know the busiest times at certain stores.

Let’s take a look at how well Hungarian cities did at social distancing.

Both retail entertainment and work traffic decreased less than in other large cities. Although Google tries to separate grocery stores and pharmacies, their traffic did not really decline.

Budapest and Pest county stayed at home more than other Hungarian counties. A close second would perhaps be Fejér county.

  • A new phase of protective measures started on May 4.
  • Spain – among other countries – has also started easing their restrictions.

Our neighbouring countries had implemented stricter restrictions, so it is no surprise that retail and recreational traffic remained highest in Hungary in the region.

Up until the second half of March, New Zealand had the highest work traffic, with Belgium and Hungary following, but in the middle of the month, the traffic in the latter two declined. In late March the work traffic dramatically declined in New Zealand too.

Google finished its data collection on April 26, so any newer data can be estimated with the help of navigation apps. Based on the numbers of Apple and Waze, the traffic slowly seems to be increasing in Budapest.
