Will a world-famous Queen hit be banned in Hungary?

According to the ruling Fidesz party, a certain Queen hit song could potentially serve as LGBTQ propaganda. This led an opposition politician in parliament to inquire whether Queen should be banned.

Democratic Coalition MP Ágnes Vadai turned the question on János Csák, Cultural Minister: “For example, is the song I Want to Break Free by Queen, and especially the music video, within the value horizon of the Fundamental Law?”

Vadai found this question relevant in light of another recent public incident, concerning the Estonian translation of Fairy Tale Land for Everyone, which was on the stand of the Petőfi Cultural Agency at the Bologna International Book Fair. This book caused quite a stir in Hungary. Szilárd Demeter immediately disbanded the translation support programme. Even though Demeter believes in the importance of freedom of thought, opinion and expression, there is a limit, writes 24.hu.

Vadai wanted to know whether the popular Queen hit song and video clip are against the beliefs of the constitution. Instead of János Csák, Eszter Vitályos answered but did not respond to the question directly.

“The Fundamental Law of Hungary reflects the Christian-conservative values that have defined the history of our country for more than a thousand years in a way that is readable and faithful for everyone,” Vitályos said.

Queen performed in front of 70,000 people in Hungary in 1986. In the video of the 1984 hit I Want to Break Free, Freddie Mercury appears in a fake-boobed top and miniskirt.
