Hungary is bracing for a taste of winter as a flow of cold, dry air brings widespread overnight frost, falling temperatures and increasingly clear skies. Meteorologists are warning that freezing conditions could affect almost the entire country from Thursday, 5 November, with particularly cold weather expected in frost-prone areas.
Temperatures to drop below freezing nationwide
According to meteorologist László Molnár, eastern air currents will bring below-average, winter-like temperatures across Europe, with Hungary facing widespread frost in the coming days. Following recent rainfall of between 3 and 10 millimetres associated with a Mediterranean cyclone, the weather is expected to turn significantly drier. Rain is unlikely, while persistent morning fog will also become less frequent.
Wednesday, 4 November, will remain relatively mild, with daytime temperatures reaching 8-13°C and overnight lows between 0°C and 5°C. However, colder conditions will arrive from Thursday, as northern and eastern air currents bring increasingly chilly air into the Carpathian Basin.
Daytime temperatures will remain largely unchanged initially, although maximum readings will frequently stay below 10°C. Overnight temperatures are expected to fall to between 0°C and -5°C across much of Hungary. In areas particularly prone to frost, temperatures could plunge to -6°C or -7°C, with some forecasts suggesting localised lows of -8°C over the weekend.
Protect your sensitive plants from winter’s bite
The approaching cold spell has prompted warnings for gardeners to bring vulnerable plants indoors before temperatures drop below freezing. Geraniums, balcony plants, young oleanders, citrus trees, bougainvillea and myrtle are among the species particularly susceptible to frost damage, writes Időkép.hu.
Geraniums should have their shoots trimmed before being moved to a cool, bright indoor location for the winter. Plants can also be sheltered in conservatories, garages or other suitable spaces. Gardeners should additionally protect frost-sensitive roots in outdoor flowerbeds. Mulch, fallen leaves or bark can provide insulation for perennial plants and shrubs, including young rose bushes.

Rain and milder temperatures expected next week
A change in the weather is forecast for Monday, 9 November, when a small weather system passing north of Hungary could bring rain to several regions. Cloudier skies should also prevent overnight temperatures from falling below freezing.
A stronger cyclone developing near the Iberian Peninsula could influence Hungary’s weather around 11-12 November, bringing substantial rainfall and a temporary rise in temperatures. Southern Hungary could experience daytime highs of 12-17°C. A more pronounced cold front is expected around 13 November, although meteorologists currently consider a return of severe frosts unlikely.
