An elderly woman has died after being struck by a bus at the Kőbánya-Kispest transport hub in Budapest on Saturday afternoon, authorities have confirmed.
The fatal incident occurred shortly after 5 PM at the bus terminus on Vak Bottyán Street, located on the Kispest side of the major interchange. While initial reports placed the accident in the city’s 10th district, police later clarified that the exact location falls within the 19th district, on the opposite side of the KÖKI Shopping Centre.
Emergency services rushed to the scene
Hungary’s National Directorate General for Disaster Management reported that a bus had hit a pedestrian at the station, prompting the deployment of professional firefighters from the capital to carry out technical rescue operations. Other emergency services and partner authorities also attended the scene.
Despite rapid intervention, the victim suffered such severe injuries that she died at the location of the accident.

Bus line 98 involved in the collision
Budapest’s public transport operator confirmed to 24.hu that one of its vehicles was involved in the tragedy. According to the company, the bus operating on route 98 struck the pedestrian.
However, the operator added that it is unable to provide further details until the ongoing investigation into the circumstances of the accident is completed.
Police launch criminal proceedings
The Budapest Police Headquarters has opened a criminal investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
Officials have not yet disclosed whether driver error, pedestrian behaviour, or other factors may have contributed to the incident. Authorities said more information will be released once the investigation progresses.

Kőbánya-Kispest is one of Budapest’s key transport nodes, serving as a major interchange between metro, rail, and numerous bus routes. The incident is sure to renew attention on safety measures at busy urban transport hubs, particularly in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic.
