Opinionated About Dining (OAD) is a dining survey that factors experience into its rating system. OAD was created by Steve Plotnicki in 2004, and over the past sixteen years, it has evolved into an internationally respected restaurant guide. Its results are based on the reviews of approximately 6,000 people. This year, 6 Hungarian restaurants were included in four categories.
OAD lists the world’s best restaurants every year based on the votes of food connoisseurs. Each voter’s results are run through an algorithm that takes into account the experience of the particular voter and the quantity as well as the quality of the restaurants they have visited. Based on these factors, each voter receives a score that determines the weight of their votes.
The Swedish Restaurant Frantzén ranked as the continent’s leading restaurant, followed by the Danish Alchemist and the Swiss Schloss Schauenstein. The Italian Lido 84 ranked 4th, and the Spanish Etxebarri took 5th place.
Although there are no Hungarian restaurants on the list, Costes and Babel Budapest are included in the recommended section, Világevő noticed.
Costes restaurant opened in 2008. It was awarded a Michelin star − the first ever in Hungary − and has maintained this status ever since.
Hubert Hlatky-Schlichter’s Michelin star restaurant provides an unprecedented fine dining experience in the Hungarian capital. The menu of Babel Budapest is mainly inspired by nature and Hungarian traditions.
Bock Bisztró took the 105th place on OAD’s Heritage list. This gourmet restaurant and wine bar is characterised by the union of traditional Hungarian bistro cuisine and modernity.
The top 20 section is heavily dominated by Spanish restaurants, including Ibai, Casa Julián, Elkano, Mannix, and Kaia Kaipe.
This list is led by the Swiss Hotel de Ville-Franck Giovannini, followed by the French Régis et Jacques Marcon and Troisgros. The Hungarian two-Michelin star Onyx restaurant ranked 106th.
In the case of the Gourmet Casual list, two Hungarian restaurants were selected in the top 60: Stand25, Széll-Szulló’s freestyle Hungarian kitchen, ranked 30th, and Borkonyha, a Michelin star restaurant and wine bar that is both a French bistro and a Hungarian family restaurant, placed 57th.
