5+1 places to try the best goulash – PHOTOS, VIDEO

food gastronomy Hungary tourism travel

Goulash soup is one, if not the strongest ‘brand’ in Hungarian gastronomy, many times even Hungarians are not aware of how popular it is. Probably, many foreigners visiting Hungary have heard about goulash soup, and the majority of them have also tried it. This time we will recommend 5 restaurants that are definitely worth visiting if you want to taste authentic goulash soup.

Gettó Gulyás

Among all the places on the list, Gettó Gulyás is the most centrally located and yet one of the best-priced restaurants. As its name suggests, goulash soup is an important part of the menu. They serve an excellent goulash soup in the middle of the party district. Of course, we had high expectations, but it was definitely worth the visit.

Kéhli vendéglő

Already just looking at the pictures of the restaurant, Kéhli vendéglő seems really inviting to spend a couple of hours in its summer garden. However, it is not just the location but also the kitchen that this place is well worth a visit. Located in the 3rd district, the restaurant is not on the traditional tourist route, but it has rather easy access both by public transport, bike or even on foot.

Hungarikum Bisztró

Hungarikum Bisztró is a place reminiscent of an authentic old-fashioned restaurant with outstanding cuisine. Due to its close proximity to the Parliament, it can be perfectly integrated into a typical tourist day, but also locals living in Budapest can easily access it. Their Google reviews speak for themselves, standing at 4.7 out of nearly 5,000 reviews. Of course, you can only expect a mouthwateringly delicious goulash soup in such a popular place.

Gyöngyösi Betyárcsárda

The look of Gyöngyös Betyárcsárda suggests that we are talking about a very traditional inn. Thanks to its great location, the restaurant, which is only a few minutes’ drive from Lake Balaton and Hévíz Thermal Bath, is frequented by many people especially in the summer season when this place really shows its busy face. If you want to plan a perfect day, pass by Gyöngyösi Betyárcsárda for a nice bowl of goulash soup on your way to Hévíz Thermal Bath!

Öreg Prés étterem in Mór

Although the city of Mór is not one of the most popular tourist attractions, it is definitely worth a stop-over to savour the goulash soup of the Öreg Prés restaurant if you are in the area. Why not plan a day trip to this charming northwestern city? Mór is close both to Budapest and Lake Balaton. The restaurant awaits you with a traditional interior and a friendly atmosphere.

+1 Laci csárda (Transylvania)

Although the dishes of the locals can be somewhat different compared to the cuisine of Hungarians who live beyond the borders, Transylvanian goulash soup has a nationwide reputation. Our list would not be complete without mentioning the goulash soup made in the town of Marosvásárhely (Tirgu Mures in Romanian), in Transylvania.
