What was once the most affordable and iconic beach snack at Lake Balaton is rapidly becoming a luxury item. A striking new analysis circulating online has revealed that the price of lángos – Hungary’s beloved deep-fried flatbread – has increased by nearly 1,000 times over the past five decades.
In stark contrast, wages in Hungary have risen significantly too, but not nearly at the same pace, leaving many to question how “affordable” a traditional Balaton holiday really is anymore. (For your reference: 1 EUR = 355 HUF)
From HUF 1.50 to a HUF 2,000+ snack
According to a widely shared TikTok compilation, reported by Pénzcentrum, the price of a plain lángos has evolved dramatically:
- 1972: HUF 1.50–3
- 1990: HUF 25
- 2000: HUF 175
- 2010: HUF 350
- 2018: HUF 500
- 2022: HUF 800–1,000
- 2025: HUF ~1,450
- 2026: HUF 2,000+ in some places
That means a nearly 1,333-fold increase at the upper end of today’s prices.
The most dramatic acceleration has taken place in the last 25 years, when prices moved from a few hundred forints to well over a thousand forints per piece.

Wages rise too, but not fast enough
Back in the 1970s, the average monthly net salary in Hungary was around HUF 2,500 – enough to buy more than 800 lángos.
Today, the average net wage stands at roughly HUF 430,000–450,000. At an average price of HUF 1,450 per lángos, that equates to around 300 pieces per salary.
In other words, while incomes have increased substantially, lángos prices have grown even faster – making the iconic beach food a far more significant expense than it used to be.
Balaton holidays get pricier across the board
Recent reporting also highlights that lángos is not the only item driving up costs at the Hungarian “sea”.
At several northern shore beaches, prices now typically look like this:
- Plain lángos: HUF 1,300–1,400
- Cheese-and-sour cream lángos: up to HUF 2,300–2,400
- Gourmet versions (gyros, bolognese, ham-based): HUF 2,800–3,400
Even desserts are affected:
- Basic pancakes: HUF 450–500
- Nutella pancakes: HUF 500–550
- Premium fillings: up to HUF 650
A simple family beach lunch can now easily reach HUF 14,000–15,000, and a full week of daily eating at the beach may add up to six-figure costs.

A nostalgic ritual turning into a luxury experience
Once upon a time, a Balaton holiday followed a simple rhythm: swimming, lángos, pancakes, and ice cream. Today, that tradition is increasingly under financial pressure.
Tourism operators say there is limited room for further price increases, as visitors are already sensitive to rising costs. Meanwhile, food trends such as premium ice cream flavours and competition winners have turned even desserts into sought-after attractions.
