Hungarian Defence Minister held talks with Serbian counterpart
Information exchange will be further strengthened between the Serbian and the Hungarian armies to increase the effectiveness of the fight against illegal migration and terrorism, Defence Minister István Simicskó said on Saturday after talks with Serbian counterpart, Aleksandar Vulin.
Serbia has undertaken a large role in handling the migration crisis, Simicskó told the press after the meeting and added that Hungary and Serbia will continue their cooperation to ensure citizens’ security. The ethnic Hungarian minority in Vojvodina and the ethnic Serbian community in Hungary are links that further increase cooperation opportunities, he said.
Hungary’s National University of Public Service and Serbia cooperates to provide training for Serbian soldiers in Hungary, Simicskó said.
Vulin expressed thanks for the participation of Hungarian soldiers in KFOR, the NATO-led international peacekeeping force in Kosovo. A total of 373 Hungarian soldiers serve in Kosovo and Serbia considers proposals to reduce KFOR’s contingent unacceptably, he added.
Commenting on migration, he said excellent cooperation has been developed with the Hungarian army and intelligence services in the fight against illegal migration and terrorism.
Hungary and Serbia plan to hold two military exercises in Serbia in September and Simicskó invited his counterpart for a visit in Budapest.
