Foreign minister discusses security with EU military committee head
Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó and Mikhail Kostarakos, head of the European Union Military Committee (EUMC), on Thursday discussed the need to strengthen the EU’s security structure.
“The past few years of crisis have shown that the EU could very easily become defenceless, and European decision makers have a responsibility to restore security to Europe and the European people,” the foreign ministry said in a statement. “Hungary is committed to supporting all measures that contribute to strengthening European defence capabilities,” it added.
Hungarian Chief of Staff Tibor Benkő invited the Greek official who heads the EUMC to Budapest. Among the topics discussed were the security situation in Europe, defence policy, common tasks and the role of Hungarian soldiers.
Kostarakos laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier in Heroes’ Square in the course of his visit. He later gave a lecture on European defence at the National Public Service University.
