Jobbik: Top court could oblige govt to pass decree on local Sunday shopping law
Budapest, July 30 (MTI) – The Constitutional Court could oblige the government to pass a decree on the exemption of local shops from the Sunday shopping ban, Jobbik MP Gabor Staudt told public news channel M1 on Thursday.
Staudt said the government’s failure to issue a decree on exemptions to the shopping law based on local particularities is a violation of the constitution, as passage of such a decree is required by law.
He noted that economy ministry state secretary Andras Tallai recently said that the government has no plans to issue such a decree, arguing that it is merely an option not an obligation. This makes a constitutional court order all the more necessary, Staudt said.
He said the Lake Balaton region in western Hungary is in need of allowing local shops to be open on Sundays as they generate most of the revenue during the summer season. The law cites tourism as one of the reasons for allowing shops to be open on Sundays, Staudt added.
