Hungary donates EUR 2 m to rebuild Christian town in Iraq
A town in Iraq inhabited by a Christian community and destroyed by the Islamic State terrorist organisation in 2014 has been rebuilt using a donation of 2 million euros by the Hungarian government, daily Magyar Idők reported on Monday.
According to the paper, the town has been renamed Tel Askouf, meaning Hungary’s daughter, in recognition of the gesture.
Tristan Azbej, deputy state secretary at the Hungarian Prime Minister’s Office, told the paper that the Hungarian government had spent a total 4.5 billion forints (EUR 14m) on aid in the past 18 months to help persecuted Christians stay in their homelands.
