LMP calls for sealing border to GMO plants

Budapest, September 16 (MTI) – The green opposition LMP party is calling on the government to veto transatlantic free trade agreement (TTIP) talks in order to maintain the ban on GMO crops in Hungary.

Party lawmaker Benedek R Sallai told MTI on Wednesday that the European Union had given up its zero tolerance principle and planned to revise its GMO rules as part of the transatlantic free trade agreement talks, which could threaten member states’ current freedom of choice.

Hungary’s cabinet is involved in double talk, condemning the free trade agreement talks at home but not willing to veto them in international forums. A potential TTIP agreement threatens Hungary’s sovereignty far more than the migrant crisis, he added.

Pulling down borders that protect local trade will result in domestic farmers and traders getting into an unviable situation and Hungary’s sovereignty over healthy food products will cease to exist, Sallai said.
