Jail sentence for unsuccessful suicide?
According to 24.hu, the public prosecutor of Győr raised charges against a 49-year-old woman. She drove on the railway tracks intentionally last November to commit suicide. As a result, the train coming from Hegyeshalom cut her car in two, but she survived with only a few scratches.
Thankfully, nobody was injured on the train, but the damage in the locomotive was worth 3.7 million HUF (EUR 10,100). The public prosecutor of Győr raised charges against her because of endangering road safety. The maximum penalty for that is three years in jail. Furthermore, the prosecutor suggested banning her from driving.

Number of suicides growing
We wrote HERE that in 2020, 1706 people committed suicide in Hungary. That shows an increase of 10% compared to the previous year. The growth rate is drastic: such a sharp rise in annual data was last seen during the worst of times regarding Hungarian suicide rates at the beginning of the 1980s. According to experts, the worrying increase can be explained by a number of reasons, including the mental difficulties caused by the pandemic.
The significant increase in the suicide rate registered in 2020 is disappointing
as the number of suicides in Hungary has shown a declining trend in the last 30 years. However, it seems that the pandemic – along with its detrimental effects in all areas of life – has caused severe mental difficulties. That unfortunately even became fatal in many cases.
According to experts, the primary reason for the drastic growth in suicides last year was the bunch of restrictions due to the pandemic. Furthermore, quarantine, loneliness, financial insecurity and forced confinement also played a part. These were such mental burdens for many people that in case of a mental illness, they could result in severe consequences if the patient did not receive adequate care.
