Breaking – the “Hungarian betyár” sentenced to 17 years for terrorist activities

The municipal court of Budapest has sentenced György Budaházy for 17 years in prison for terrorist activities and other crimes committed between 2007 and 2009, in the retrial of a case dismissed in 2018.

Five other accomplices were handed prison sentences of more than ten years, and others of around five years, the court said on Wednesday.

According to the charges, Budahazy set up a terrorist organisation called the Hungarian Arrows to carry out attacks against lawmakers of the then ruling Socialist-Free Democrat alliance between 2007 and 2009. Their actions were aimed at changing government policies and intimidating “certain groups of citizens”, the non-binding ruling said.
