Police: Over 10,000 refugees arrive from Ukraine to Hungary on Sunday
Fully 5,266 people crossed into Hungary directly from Ukraine on Sunday, while another 5,036 from Ukraine crossed from Romania, the national police headquarters told MTI on Monday.
Police issued temporary residence permits valid for thirty days to 1,212 people, the police website said. Holders of such permits must contact a local immigration office near their place of residence within thirty days to apply for permanent documents, it added.
Budapest police received 960 refugees, 354 children among them, by train, according to the municipal police website.
Refugees arriving on special train services at Kobanya felső railway station, in eastern Budapest, were taken by bus to the BOK sports and events centre serving as a humanitarian transit point.
The authorities transported 33 people, including 18 children, to accommodation in the capital and outlying areas.

Let’s unpack this headline. So we have 5,266 direct entries and 5,036 indirect ones. Total of 10,302.
Of these 10,302 arrivals, only 1,212 people decided to get temporary residence permits – which they may or may not extend.
Eventually, we have 960 people arriving at a transit point, and a handful making their way to Budapest and surrounding areas.
Again – we are a TRANSIT COUNTRY – people come, and then LEAVE. Transit. First or second stop to the rest of Europe. Net number staying in our country not even remotely close to the number of arrivals.
Looking at the numbers arriving from Romania, I’m guessing not too many people are sticking around there, either …
