More than 105,000 illegal migrants caught at border so far this year
The Hungarian authorities have prevented over 105,000 people from crossing the border illegally so far this year compared with 43,000 at this point in 2021, the prime minister’s chief domestic security adviser said on Wednesday.
“Attempts by migrants to enter the country forcefully in large groups, physical assault against patrol officers and migrants damaging the border fence have become everyday occurrences,” György Bakondi told public broadcaster M1.
Italy, Greece and Turkey are again seeing large waves of migrants reaching their maritime borders and many are trying to enter Europe via Spain and the Western Balkan route, Bakondi said. Most of those arriving are Syrians, Afghans, Pakistanis and Indians, he added.
He said there were no signs of migration waning by the end of the summer, so the situation demanded careful analysis and firm government action.
Given the situation on the Ukraine-Hungary border and the war in Ukraine, it can be said that the Hungarian authorities are handling “a very complex and in many ways a very dangerous situation on the country’s borders requiring enormous effort and concentration”, Bakondi said.
