Opposition files complaint over Hungarian government’s ‘sanctions-bomb’ billboards
Opposition politicians on Wednesday said they are filing a criminal complaint over the government’s billboard campaign depicting European Union sanctions as a bomb.
Budapest district mayors of the Democratic Coalition (DK) are filing the complaint over scaremongering and threats of public endangerment. The billboards “are the latest example of the government’s money-wasting spree,” Sándor Szaniszló, mayor of Budapest’s 18th district, told a press conference ahead of a meeting of the city assembly.
The EU’s war-related sanctions do not apply to Hungary and neither does the war pose a threat to the country, he said, adding that all sanctions against Russia have been approved by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Szaniszló said the billboards depicting a bomb with the word “sanctions” on it were misleading and diverted attention away from “the social crisis caused by the deeds of the Orbán government”. He said billboard company leaders would also be “complicit” if they did not take the billboards down.
Ruling Fidesz said in a statement that “Gyurcsány and company” wanted to remove the billboards because they “raise awareness of the destructive Brussels sanctions”, and the “National Consultation” survey on the subject.
The sanctions ruin European economy and quality of life, the statement said. “There is an energy crisis, soaring energy and food prices, growing inflation and the burdens of families and companies are becoming brutal because of the sanctions,” it said.

We may not have any money – but whatever we do have, we spend on … Propaganda ??? Kremlin Rulebook 101
Th billboards only told the truth. It is better to be informed than shocked.
I was wondering just how long it will take before (if ever) we see this subject here in an article.
I would tend to think this Government is trying to turn pro-EU Hungarians against the EU, and who knows, eventually persuade them that it’s best if there was a HuXit, as well as blaming the EU for some of Hungary’s ails (the other two “pets” being George Soros and illegal immigrants).
V.O.’s Government is NEVER EVER at fault. It is never ever to blame for anything bad that happens to/in Hungary. It is ALWAYS something/someone external.
… I can’t be sure at all, but maybe there is a subliminal message in those billboards about Russia bombing Ukraine as well – perhaps that it’s the EU’s fault that Russia is bombing Ukraine? (?).
Ps. I am a strong believer in “Never bite the hand that feeds you”.
We’re only informed with what the government wants us to know, and they therefore manipulate information accordingly.
The government hopes we’re too stupid to research anything for ourselves. The money for this propaganda nonsense would be better spent elsewhere.
The sanctions do appear to be working. Anecdote: we now see Russian passport holders who live and work outside of Russia (and are tax resident elsewhere) now being aggressively pursued by the (Russian) Federal Taxation Service (FTS). The FTS is trying to find income or assets which they can potentially tax, also outside of Russia. This is totally new, as there is no obligation to file a Russian tax return for non-Russian resident, Russian passport holders. The right to tax is with the jurisdiction in which they live and work. So – a bit of desperation, Kremlin looking for revenue wherever they can!
