BREAKING! Brutal attack on former Hungarian foreign minister and his wife

Géza Jeszenszky, former Hungarian foreign minister and ex-ambassador to Washington and Oslo, was violently assaulted outside his home in Budapest on Sunday afternoon. The assailant, armed with a hammer, attacked both Jeszenszky and his wife in what appears to be a targeted act of violence.

A familiar attacker strikes again

According to Jeszenszky, the couple had just arrived home when he felt a heavy blow to his head upon entering their building. Initially, he thought something had fallen from the ceiling—until a second strike prompted him to turn around. That’s when he recognised the attacker: the same man who had assaulted him two years earlier, then using metal screws as weapons. This time, the assailant was armed with a hammer, Klubradió said.

Jeszenszky sustained a life-threatening skull injury and was immediately hospitalised and underwent emergency surgery. His wife suffered a minor injury and was left with a bump on her head. A nearby restaurant employee witnessed the attack and alerted the police, despite the assailant allegedly threatening with a weapon. Officers managed to detain the suspect shortly afterwards at Fővám Square.

Surgery and ongoing recovery

Jeszenszky was rushed to the hospital, where doctors performed surgery to stabilise his condition. He is expected to recover, but will remain under medical care for at least a week, according to his physicians.

Both he and his wife have given statements to the police, who have launched a criminal investigation. The suspect has reportedly confessed, though his motivations remain unclear.
