The Porcelain of the Silk Road: Dehua White Porcelain exhibition opens in Budapest
The Chinese Cultural Center in Budapest hosted the grand opening of the exhibition “The Porcelain of the Silk Road” Dehua White Porcelain Dialogue of Civilizations – 2025 Hungary.

The event, on September 10, 2025, was jointly organized by the China-Foreign Cultural and Tourism Exchange Center, the Chinese Cultural Center in Budapest, and the Dehua County People’s Government. The event was attended by Sun Jie, Cultural Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Hungary; Jin Hao, Director of the Chinese Cultural Center in Budapest; Judit Éva Nagy, President of the Hungarian-Chinese Friendship Association; Dr. Zsombor Jékely, Deputy Director of Collections at the Hungarian Museum of Applied Arts; and more than forty representatives of the Chinese and Hungarian cultural, tourism, and media sectors.
In his speech, Cultural Counselor Sun Jie emphasized that Dehua white porcelain had long been internationally renowned as a “cultural icon” of China’s ancient Maritime Silk Road, and today serves to deepen relations and cultural exchange between the Chinese and Hungarian peoples.
He expressed his hope that the event would introduce more people to the heritage of traditional Chinese culture and deepen the long-term cultural and artistic exchanges between the two countries. In his speech, Dr. Zsombor Jékely explained that porcelain has been a link between China and the European continent for centuries, and that Dehua porcelain can be considered one of the early sources of European porcelain making, which had a great influence not only on Hungary’s porcelain collection but also on the development of European porcelain-making techniques. He also emphasized that porcelain is an important symbol of commercial and artistic exchange between civilizations, which is why the exhibition plays a significant role in cultural exchange between China and Hungary.
More than forty works by Dehua ceramic art masters from China were brought to the event. The works are excellent examples of the combination of a thousand-year-old porcelain heritage and contemporary innovation, emphasizing the role of traditional craftsmanship in the development of China’s national cultural strategy. At the opening ceremony, visitors were able to watch a promotional video entitled “Dehua, the Ceramic Capital of the World,” which showcased Dehua’s industrial vitality and cultural tourism appeal.
Representatives of Dehua County signed a cooperation agreement with the president of the Hungarian-Chinese Friendship Association and the head of the Szidónia porcelain company on the sale of white porcelain in Hungary and the integration of ceramic artworks and cultural tourism resources. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in the history of cooperation between the Chinese and Hungarian ceramics industries. Huang Junrong, head of the Dehua County Party Committee, thanked the Hungarian-Chinese Friendship Association and the Hungarian Museum of Applied Arts for their cooperation in the successful organization of the event by presenting them with a beautiful piece of white porcelain.
Exhibition and workshop
The Chinese Cultural Center in Budapest created a special exhibition space for this occasion so that those interested could learn about the history of white porcelain and enjoy its beauty in regularly changing exhibitions.

The Porcelain of the Silk Road” event was a very important step towards deepening the friendly cooperation and cultural exchange between China and Hungary. Porcelain is a symbol of peace, cooperation, openness, and acceptance in Eastern wisdom, opening a new path in the history of cultural exchanges along the Silk Road.
