Fire erupts at Budapest lángos stand, residents evacuated

A fire broke out at a popular lángos stand in Budapest’s seventh district on Sunday. It prompted a rapid response from the city’s fire brigade. According to the Budapest Fire Department, an oil fryer in the Madách Imre Square establishment caught fire, causing flames to engulf part of the premises.
Firefighters quickly contained the blaze, extinguishing the flames and cutting off the electricity supply. The operation is now in the clean-up and post-incident phase. Emergency medical services were also on the scene as a precaution.
Nine residents were escorted out of the building for safety, while occupants of three apartments (eight people in total) chose to remain inside, the Disaster Management Authority reported. No injuries have been reported so far. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
Budapest’s lángos legacy
Lángos, a deep-fried flatbread often topped with sour cream, cheese, or garlic, is a beloved Hungarian street food staple. Budapest is home to numerous iconic lángos stands, from long-standing local favourites to new establishments catering to both tourists and residents.

Despite occasional accidents like the one at Madách Imre Square, the city’s lángos culture continues to thrive. The bustling streets of Budapest, particularly in the inner districts, are dotted with vendors serving this traditional treat, offering a quick, satisfying snack that has become synonymous with Hungarian culinary heritage.
