Hungary’s election results officially enter into force

The results of the April 12 parliamentary elections have become final and entered into force on Friday.

Hungary’s election results are now official

Individual constituency results of the April 12 general election became final everywhere on Wednesday, April 29, and the National Election Committee (Nemzeti Választási Bizottság, NVB) established the national list results the same day.

An appeal against the NVB’s decision could be filed within one day, and the two appeals submitted were adjudicated and rejected by the Kuria (supreme court) by Friday. One of the appeals was filed by Our Homeland party leader Laszlo Toroczkai who requested the NVB’s decision be changed due to a violation of the rule regarding the determination of the election results.

Toroczkai said he was unable to reach his constituents on Facebook and Instagram because service provider Meta Platforms Ireland Limited had suspended his access to his account and deleted his pages prior the campaign period. He alleged that this violated the basic principle of the rule of law, which also includes the principle of fair democratic elections.

Kuria turned down both appeals

The Kuria ruled that the appeal was unfounded. The NVB’s decision establishing the national list result can only be challenged on the grounds that, when aggregating the votes, fractional votes, and partial results, the NVB acted unlawfully and did not comply with the relevenat rules.

Kuria said that the alleged violation was not related to the process of determining the result, but to campaign activities prior to voting, and therefore could not be examined within the scope of the appeal against the NVB decision.
