Authority to crack down on tax-evading Uber drivers
Budapest (MTI) – Hungary’s tax authority NAV will identify drivers who have failed to pay their taxes on earlier revenues from ride-hailing service Uber, which no longer operates in Hungary, daily Magyar Idők reported on Tuesday.
Citing information from the economy ministry, the paper said that NAV had received the names and income data of Hungarian drivers who had worked as part of Uber, and will start checking those figures against tax returns submitted.
Csilla Tamás Czinege, a deputy state secretary at the ministry, told the paper that Uber’s turnover had totalled over one billion forints (EUR 3.3m) in 2015, and suggested that a large part of that sum had not been declared.
As an example, the official mentioned a venture which had worked with several drivers, earning 70 million forints, whose tax payment amounted to 2 million forints.
