Police file charges against Socialist politician accused of denying crimes of communism

Budapest, November 15 (MTI) – Police have filed charges against Socialist politician Szófia Havas on suspicion that she denied the crimes of communism, the daily Magyar Idők reported on Tuesday.

Opposition Jobbik and the Christian Democrat Youth Association lodged a complaint about Havas to the police in connection with the charges.

In connection with the 60th anniversary of the 1956 revolution and freedom fight, Havas told Russian state media that the revolution had been a “provocation” by followers of Miklós Horthy, Hungary’s regent between 1920 and 1940, in the course of which they had gone “door to door looking for communists and Jews”.

Havas faces a possible prison term of up to three years if she is found guilty.

The Socialist Party has launched a disciplinary procedure against Havas concerning her statements.
