A large area of pastureland and fields are burning in the Hortobagy National Park, in eastern Hungary, the National Directorate General for Disaster Management (OKF) told MTI on Wednesday afternoon.

According to initial estimates, vegetation is burning across 30 to 40 hectares near Highway 33, between Tiszafüred and Kocsújfalu, the statement said. The flames threatened pastures, summer pastures and several cattle, but the livestock farm was successfully protected, it added.

The fire, which spread over a large area and in multiple directions, also reached the reed beds. Professional firefighters from several nearby towns, as well as the municipal fire department from Egyek and volunteer firefighters from Bábolna have been dispatched or are en route to the scene, the statement said.
