Six years ago, the 44-day Patriotic War restored Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and brought nearly three decades of occupation to an end. The liberation of Shusha on 8 November 2020 determined the outcome of the war and gave Victory Day its historic meaning.

“Victory Day is a source of immense pride for the Azerbaijani people around the world. It marks the restoration of our territorial integrity and celebrates the unity, determination and courage that led to our Victory. The liberation of Shusha – Azerbaijan’s cultural capital and a sacred symbol of our national identity – realised the decades-long aspiration of the Azerbaijani people to restore historical justice and return to native lands. On this day, we also honour the memory of our martyrs and pay tribute to our veterans, whose valiance and sacrifice made this Victory possible,” said Ambassador Esmira Jafarova.

Following the war, His Excellency Mr. Ilham Aliyev, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, initiated a peace process with Armenia. On 8 August 2025, the historic summit held in Washington gave a new impetus to the peace process and opened new prospects for cooperation and connectivity in the South Caucasus.

Today, the liberated territories are being rebuilt, and displaced families are returning to their ancestral homes. The Republic of Azerbaijan remains committed to transforming its Victory into a peaceful and prosperous future for the region, where guns no longer scare and kill, and hope has never been stronger.
