Drivers and public transport passengers should expect significant traffic changes around Budapest’s Heroes’ Square on Saturday evening, 12 September, as an event takes place in the area.

The Budapest Festival Orchestra will give a free classical music concert at Heroes’ Square from 6:30 PM, prompting several road closures and changes to public transport services. The Budapest Transport Centre (Budapesti Közlekedési Központ, BKK) recommends using the M1 metro, which will run more frequently if demand requires, to reach the event.

Several roads to close from 4 PM

From 4 PM until approximately 8:30 PM, the following roads will be closed:

  • Állatkerti körút between Gundel Károly út and Heroes’ Square;
  • Heroes’ Square between Kós Károly promenade and Dózsa György út;
  • Kós Károly promenade between Hermina út and Heroes’ Square in the direction approaching from the M3 motorway.

From 6 PM until approximately 8:30 PM, further closures will affect the entire Heroes’ Square, Andrássy Avenue between Bajza utca and Dózsa György út, Kós Károly promenade in both directions, Olof Palme promenade between Zichy Mihály út and Heroes’ Square, and Dózsa György út between Városligeti fasor and Podmaniczky utca.

Buses and trolleybuses will be diverted

Several BKK services will operate on altered routes from 6 PM. The 105 and 210B buses will bypass Andrássy Avenue between Bajza utca and Dózsa György út, instead travelling via Podmaniczky utca and Szondi utca. They will not serve their usual Bajza utca or Heroes’ Square stops.

The 20E bus will be diverted through City Park and along Hungária körút, meaning it will not serve Heroes’ Square.

The 30, 30A, 79 and 230 buses will avoid Dózsa György út and travel via Zichy Mihály út, Hermina út, Állatkerti körút and Gundel Károly út. They will use affected trolleybus stops along the diversion, with stops near Heroes’ Square on Gundel Károly út.

The 75 trolleybus will also be diverted via Hermina út, Állatkerti körút and Gundel Károly út, using the relevant 72 trolleybus stops.

The 81 trolleybus will already be affected from 4 PM, with its stop near Heroes’ Square towards Dózsa György út M moved to Gundel Károly út.

Check BudapestGO before travelling

BKK advises passengers to plan their journeys using the BudapestGO app. The application provides real-time public transport information and can calculate suitable routes around the temporary restrictions. Tickets and travel passes can also be purchased through the app.

With the closures expected to last until around 8:30 PM, passengers travelling through the Heroes’ Square and City Park area on Saturday evening are advised to allow extra time and check their route before setting off. For those attending the concert, BKK’s main recommendation is to use the M1 metro, which may operate at increased frequency according to passenger demand.
