The capital is preparing joint proposals with the most affected districts to tackle a social crisis, Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony said on Thursday.

Karácsony said on Facebook that consultations had been held with the mayors of the city’s districts regarding the public safety and social situation in Budapest. The meeting was attended by Karácsony and the mayors of districts 13, 7, 6 and 8, and the deputy mayor of district 9.

Karácsony said proposals were being drawn up jointly to tackle the situation surrounding drug use, and supporting the strengthening of police presence on the streets.

He added that the problems were rooted in a deep-seated social crisis, adding that a genuine solution can only be achieved through a joint action programme with the state that addresses reducing the police shortage, restoring addiction care and tackling housing issues in equal measure.
