One of Budapest’s most important roads to be renewed, here are the redevelopment plans

BKK releases its latest redevelopment plans.

One of Budapest’s busiest main roads, a key stretch of Üllői Road, may soon undergo a major upgrade. The Budapest Transport Center (BKK) has opened public consultation on plans to renovate the section between Nagyvárad Square and Ecseri Road, with a focus on improving bicycle infrastructure.

Renewal with help from the community

Üllői Road is a vital radial route connecting downtown Budapest with the city’s southeastern districts. The proposed renovation aims to make the corridor safer and more appealing for the most vulnerable road users—pedestrians, cyclists, and the elderly. This initiative aligns with the guidelines of the Budapest Mobility Plan (BMT) and the city’s traffic safety strategy, and also contributes to reducing environmental impact and urban noise pollution.

The BKK has launched a public consultation process, soliciting feedback, suggestions, and comments from residents and commuters. The survey can be completed by May 26, 2025, on the organization’s website.

What’s changing?

The core of the project involves constructing physically separated, one-way bike lanes between Nagyvárad Square and Ecseri Road. The planning work includes intersection crossings and necessary traffic engineering and road construction tasks. BKK emphasizes the importance of upgrading the quality and comfort of existing bike lanes and filling current gaps, particularly in the direction of Vágóhíd Street and Gyáli Street bike lanes.

Additionally, smaller-scale improvements are planned between Könyves Kálmán Boulevard and Borbás Vince Promenade. These enhancements will include expanding pedestrian areas and, where feasible, increasing green space.

European-funded project

The project’s design and construction are set to be financed through European Union funds, as part of the TOP Plusz-4.1.2-23 “Bike Highway” program. BKK’s funding request received approval in January 2025. If the procurement process is successful and EU funds are secured, construction plans could be finalized in the second half of 2026, with project completion expected by the second half of 2028.

The Üllői Road development is closely linked to other bicycle infrastructure initiatives across Budapest. The goal is to establish continuous, high-quality, one-way bike lanes and cycle paths that are at least two meters wide and physically protected wherever possible. These so-called “bike highways” will connect more neighborhoods, making them safely accessible by bike.

The planned renovation of the section of Üllői Road between Nagyvárad Square and Ecseri Road marks a significant step toward modernizing Budapest’s transportation network. In addition to enhancing cycling infrastructure, the project is set to expand pedestrian areas and green spaces, contributing to a more livable and sustainable urban environment, according to BKK.
