But which is the fastest, cheapest or easiest option in 2026? Here is an updated guide to getting from Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport to downtown Budapest, including current ticket prices and practical advice for late-night arrivals.

Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) is located southeast of central Budapest. Unlike some European capitals, Budapest does not currently have a direct metro or railway connection from the passenger terminal to downtown.

Fortunately, getting from Budapest Airport to the city center is still relatively easy.

For most visitors, the direct 100E Airport Express is the simplest public transport option. Budget-conscious travellers can use the 200E bus and M3 metro, while taxis, Uber and airport transfers provide door-to-door alternatives.

100E Airport Express: The easiest way from Budapest Airport to the city center

For most visitors, the 100E Airport Express is our recommended option.

The bus connects Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport directly with Deák Ferenc tér, one of the most important transport hubs in the heart of Budapest, via Kálvin tér.

There is no need to change buses or transfer to the metro.

The 100E operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, making it particularly convenient for passengers arriving late at night or departing early in the morning.

During busy daytime periods, buses run very frequently. Depending on the day and time, daytime frequencies can be approximately every 6–10 minutes.

The journey between the airport and downtown generally takes around 30–40 minutes, although Budapest traffic can increase travelling time.

How much does the 100E airport bus cost in 2026?

Budapest Airport to city center, the standard 100E Airport Express ticket costs HUF 2,500 for a single journey.

This is a special airport bus fare. A standard BKK single ticket by itself is not valid on the 100E.

However, since October 2025, passengers holding certain valid Budapest public transport passes can purchase an HUF 1,000 add-on airport shuttle bus ticket instead of paying the full HUF 2,500 fare.

The add-on must be used together with an eligible valid pass.

People aged 65 and over can travel free of charge on the 100E subject to BKK’s eligibility and identification rules.

Where can you buy a 100E ticket?

One of the easiest options is the BudapestGO app.

Tickets are also available from BKK ticket vending machines, while passengers can purchase the airport shuttle ticket using a bank card through the Budapest Pay&GO devices on board the 100E.

If you use a digital ticket, make sure you follow the validation instructions when boarding.

200E bus + M3 metro: The cheapest public transport option

If keeping costs down is more important than getting downtown as quickly as possible, consider the 200E bus.

Unlike the 100E, the 200E is part of Budapest’s regular public transport network.

The bus connects Terminal 2 with Kőbánya-Kispest, where passengers can transfer to the M3 metro line towards central Budapest.

The 200E operates day and night.

During normal metro operating hours, the basic route is from Budapest Airport to city center in 2026:

Budapest Airport → 200E → Kőbánya-Kispest → M3 metro → city center

This option takes longer than the 100E and requires a transfer, but regular BKK tickets, travelcards and eligible passes can be used.

Budapest Airport’s contracted taxi partner in 2026 is Főtaxi.

The traditional taxi stands are located on the arrivals level outside Terminals 2A and 2B.

How to get from Budapest city center back to the airport

The same basic options apply in the opposite direction.

The 100E Airport Express departs from Deák Ferenc tér and travels directly to Budapest Airport, serving Kálvin tér on the way.

Because the service runs 24/7, it is also an option for many early-morning departures.

However, always leave a reasonable time buffer.

Budapest traffic can be unpredictable, airport security can become busy during peak travel periods, and summer weekends can bring particularly heavy passenger volumes.

If using a taxi or Uber, allow additional time during weekday rush hours.

Can you use a Budapest travelcard on the 100E?

A normal Budapest travelcard or pass does not automatically make the 100E free.
