A fire broke out in a multi-storey residential building in Budapest’s 18th district on Wednesday evening, forcing dozens of residents to leave their homes. Ten people, including seven children, were taken to hospital, according to reports.
The fire broke out in a building on Ráday Gedeon Street, where a ground-floor flat was engulfed in flames.
43 residents forced to leave their homes
According to the Hungarian News Agency (MTI), the building contains 32 flats and was filled with smoke following the fire. A total of 43 people had to leave the property while firefighters tackled the blaze. Máté Kisdi, spokesman for the Budapest Disaster Management Directorate, said residents would not be allowed to return to their homes until the building had been properly ventilated.
The initial reports indicated that one person had been taken away from the scene by ambulance. Later information confirmed that ten people, including seven children, were transported to hospital.
The available reports did not immediately provide details about the condition of those taken to hospital.

Firefighters prevent flames from spreading
Professional firefighters from Budapest, together with volunteer firefighters from the FOKA River Disaster Management and Special Rescue Public Benefit Association, responded to the incident. Several water jets were used to fight the flames, while firefighters simultaneously evacuated the building and worked to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the property.
The blaze was eventually brought under control, and firefighters began carrying out follow-up operations. The cause of the fire has not yet been reported.
