A flat was gutted by fire in a four-storey residential building in Budapest’s District III on Sunday, filling the entire building with smoke. Firefighters evacuated 15 residents, including some who had to be brought outside using rescue masks.

According to the National Directorate General for Disaster Management, the fire broke out in a flat on Pozsonyi Street. Budapest’s professional firefighters arrived at the scene in large numbers and extinguished the flames using water jets.

Under the direction of the disaster management operations service, firefighters also dealt with remaining hot spots and inspected and cooled the building’s external façade and roof.

Residents evacuated, gas supply suspended in five flats

Fifteen people were evacuated from the building. Some residents were taken outside wearing rescue masks, while an ambulance was also dispatched to the scene.

A heated emergency bus was provided for residents while the situation was being dealt with. Gas utility specialists inspected the building, but the gas supply was not restored to five flats.

The local municipality is arranging temporary accommodation for the owner of the flat affected by the fire, while eight other residents are making their own arrangements for temporary housing.

The disaster management authority shared footage of the incident on its social media page, showing the emergency response in the residential area.

Fatal fire in Budapest in October

According to a report by Origo, a fatal fire broke out almost two weeks ago on Szeréna Road in District II: the 80-square-metre property was completely engulfed in flames by the time emergency services arrived at the scene. The body of the doctor who lived there was found inside the flat.
