Chilling and tragic new details emerge in the murder of American woman Kenzie in Budapest

Hungarian police have closed the investigation into the killing of American citizen Kenzie Michalski in Budapest. The Irish man accused of the crime, who allegedly tried to conceal the body, claimed that Kenzie died accidentally during consensual BDSM intercourse, supposedly at her request. However, authorities say his account is contradicted by nearly all available evidence, and they believe he acted coldly following her death. The Budapest Chief Prosecutor’s Office is now seeking a prison sentence for M.L.T.

Police reject the accused’s dubious account

Last November, the shocking death sent ripples through Hungary and drew attention in the United States. A lively young American woman vanished from Budapest’s party district. It later emerged that she had been murdered, and the suspect had allegedly attempted to hide her body in woods near Lake Balaton.

Police concluded their investigation in September. Nearly three months later, the Chief Prosecutor’s Office announced formal charges, signalling serious doubts about the Irishman’s claim that Kenzie had visited him for sexual purposes and had died accidentally during BDSM sex. Hungary’s conviction rate in prosecution cases exceeds 90%, meaning the accused faces a strong likelihood of conviction.

Murder took place in a rented apartment in central Budapest

The Irishman maintains that it was a tragic accident and says he panicked afterwards. According to his lawyer, György Magyar, he searched online for information about CCTV locations, wild boars, and police investigative methods in an attempt to cover his tracks.

However, police and prosecutors argue that the suspect’s calm and methodical behaviour suggests a cold-blooded act. The accused had travelled extensively for work and arrived in Budapest on 28 October last year. On 4 November, he met Kenzie, who accompanied him to his apartment. CCTV footage shows them holding hands and walking to the lift, suggesting no immediate sign of violence.

Police believe the assault began inside the flat, where the suspect allegedly tied Kenzie up and strangled her. Shockingly, he is said to have filmed parts of the assault and her death. These videos were later discovered on his mobile phone, according to reports from a Hungarian news agency.

Attempt to dispose of the body

On 5 November, M.L.T. allegedly bought a suitcase, and the following day rented a car to dispose of Kenzie’s body in the forest near Lake Balaton. He reportedly searched online to determine whether wild boars would consume human remains.

Police arrested him on 7 November, and he subsequently led them to the location where the body had been hidden. By that time, the entire country was searching for Kenzie, and her friends had already alerted the US Embassy and several members of Congress.

The Budapest Chief Prosecutor accuses the detained man of premeditated murder, rejecting his lawyer’s earlier suggestion of manslaughter. The prosecution is demanding a prison sentence without the possibility of parole, followed by deportation from Hungary.

Family maintains his innocence

If convicted, he will serve his sentence in a Hungarian prison and will be permanently banned from returning. The accused’s parents remain convinced of his innocence and reportedly offered up to 20 million forints to secure his release under house arrest and to cover his living expenses.
