Budapest ranks among Europe’s top health and wellness cities preceding Berlin, Athens

Health and wellness are becoming increasingly important factors when ranking cities, and Budapest consistently earns high marks in various European comparisons. A recent study evaluating 46 European cities based on air quality, green space, the number of bath and fitness facilities, urban noise levels, and hours of sunshine placed Budapest 11th—ahead of cities like Berlin and Athens.
Historic bath culture meets modern wellness
One of Budapest’s greatest attractions is its world-famous bath culture. The city boasts 123 natural warm and hot water springs and wells, producing 70 million litres of thermal water daily at temperatures ranging from 21 to 78°C. Iconic baths like Széchenyi, Gellért, Rudas, Lukács, and Palatinus offer not only therapeutic treatments but also modern wellness experiences, including saunas, adventure pools, massages, and various preventive health services. These facilities are popular among both locals and tourists, drawing in millions of visitors each year.

Healthcare improvements and screening programs
In recent years, Budapest has placed strong emphasis on improving its healthcare system. Through the Healthy Budapest Program, billions of forints have been invested in modernising district clinics and medical equipment, and in increasing access to screening exams for residents.
In May 2024, the city launched an extensive, free health screening campaign aimed at the early detection of cancer and cardiovascular diseases. The program includes mobile screening units, CT and MRI diagnostics, and a medical dispatcher service, all available to Budapest residents.
Green spaces and active living
Budapest’s green areas—such as Margaret Island, City Park, and Gellért Hill—offer space not only for relaxation but also for physical activity. Outdoor gyms, running tracks, bike lanes, and open-air sports facilities all encourage a healthy lifestyle among city dwellers. In recent years, the city government has created several new green zones and expanded quiet, restful urban areas.
Competitive in a European context
While the list compiled by Omio ranked Madrid, Lisbon, and Vienna in the top three, Budapest found itself in the company of Nordic, Western European, and Mediterranean cities long seen as models for urban wellness. Strengths of the Hungarian capital include its historic bath culture, ongoing healthcare advancements, abundant green spaces, and a wide range of modern wellness services.
