A new 36,000-square-metre public park is planned along the Pest side of the Danube in Budapest’s popular 13th District, with residents now being asked what they would like to see there.
New park planned between Népfürdő Street and the Danube
A large new public park is set to transform a 3.6-hectare area of the Danube waterfront in Budapest’s 13th District. The development will be located in the Vizafogó area, stretching from south of the E.ON sports centre to Dráva Street, between Népfürdő Street and the river.
The district municipality is developing the park as its own investment, with the area set to become a major new recreational and green space for local residents, Építészfórum wrote based on the district’s statement. At 36,000 square metres, the park will be almost one and a half times the size of the 26,000-square-metre Millenáris Széllkapu Park on the Buda side of the city.
The development area consists of nine separate plots. These include three building plots owned by the district municipality, four plots already designated as public green spaces, a road owned by the Municipality of Budapest, and a roughly 14,000-square-metre area currently owned by E.ON.
Under a letter of intent, the E.ON-owned area is expected to come under the ownership and management of the district municipality.

Residents can help shape the park
The district has now launched the first round of public consultation, asking residents what facilities and functions they would like to see in the new park. The consultation began on 15 September. Based on the suggestions received, experts will prepare a concept plan for the area, which will then be submitted to residents for another round of feedback.
The municipality says the two-stage process is intended to ensure that the final development reflects local needs and includes features that have broad public support. The main objective is to create a substantial, connected green area by planting a large number of new trees and other vegetation.
The park is expected to be partially opened to the public by the end of 2028 or early 2029.
Part of a green development strategy
The project forms part of the 13th District’s longer-term urban development and greening strategy, including its Long-Term Development Concept, Integrated Urban Development Strategy and AngyalZöld 4.0 development strategy.
The district has already converted building plots into public parks and playgrounds at eight locations in recent years.
These projects include Vizafogó Park, which opened in 2022 and received the Budapest Architectural Award; Thurzó Park, opened in 2023 and later recognised with a Landscape Architecture Award; and Rokolya Park, which opened in 2025. A new playground on Szent László Street is also currently under construction.
