Hungarian Cardinal Erdő: World ‘in desperate need of hope’

Easter, the feast of hope, offers the world and its peoples something for which they have a desperate need, Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest said at the commencement of Easter Mass in Esztergom Basilica on Sunday.
Cardinal Péter Erdő said in his sermon that Christ’s resurrection, accepted by God, embodied the creation of peace between heaven and earth.
He said peoples were in desperate need of Easter hope in the disoriented world of today. Hope may help people avoid “destructive wars and seek solutions to humanity’s problems together”, by trusting in the creator, he said.
“Our people also need such hope so as not to get lost in the mazes of international life and sink into hopelessness,” he said, urging people to “recognise the value and mission of their community life.”
The New Testament and teachings of the Church authentically preserved and elucidated the legacy of Jesus, Erdő said. Through a personal, spiritual relationship with Jesus, and by connecting with Him through historical and personal spiritual experiences, “our lives change”. This, he said, was what Christian testimony meant, adding that today’s world also needed such testimony.
“Let our communities be permeated not by hatred or mutual slander, not by fear of the future, but by love that approaches others with an open heart,” the cardinal said.
