Hungarian swimmer Hubert Kós won the country’s first gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games this evening in the 200m men’s backstroke.

Interestingly, he was not in the first three after 50 metres, and the Greek Apostolos Christou led even after 100 metres. However, in the third 50 metres, Kós could take the lead and beat all competitors.

Superstar Bob Bowman trains Kós in the USA. He was the trainer of the 23-time Olympic champion Michael Phelps. The American expert convinced him to compete in the 200m backstroke instead of the 400m medley. Afterwards, he won the championships in Fukuoka in 2023.

Kós earned self-confidence in the USA that he could beat anybody

Bowman said his predecessor, Zoltán Magyarovits, did a wonderful job with Kós, and the American professional “helped only a little”, especially in the underwater work and his flip turn technique.

He said he gained some self-confidence in America since he trains with the best swimmers. If they can beat them on a random day, he can surely do so in the international championships, 24.hu wrote.

Hubert Kós was very happy after his victory and could barely speak. After a couple of breathless seconds, he said he swam similarly to his Fukuoka World Championships performance, where he won gold in 200m backstroke.

Budapest is one of the world’s top sports capitals!

Budapest Chain Bridge and Buda Castle western leaders

Based on a new study published by Burson, a global leader in communications, Budapest is one of the world’s sports capitals. The Hungarian capital won 14th place on their 2024 Sports Cities Ranking.

According to insidethegames.biz, Burson ranked 100 cities around the world. “The ranking is based on a quantitative analysis of the digital footprint of the association between sport and a city (50% weighting), combined with perception-based opinions from leaders of international sports federations (25%) and major international sports media (25%)”, the news outlet wrote.

The world’s number one sports city is Paris, where the 2024 Summer Olympic Games will begin on 26 July. The second place went to Los Angeles, the third was New York, the fourth was London, and Madrid, the capital of Spain, was in fifth place.

With its 14th place on the ranking, Budapest precedes cities like Las Vegas, Munich, Rome, and Sydney.

In the Central-Eastern European region (the area between Germany and Russia), only Austria’s Innsbruck (43), Serbia’s Belgrade (59), and Poland’s Warsaw (96) are on the list. In Europe, only London and Manchester precede Hungary’s Budapest.

Formula 1: After last year’s incident, Lando Norris will race in unique Hungarian Herend helmet

Lando Norris’ last encounter with a prized Herend porcelain did not go too well: in 2023, he accidentally smashed Max Verstappen’s winning trophy while celebrating after the Hungarian Grand Prix. But from the accident came a collaboration, and this year, the McLaren driver will wear a unique, hand-painted helmet adorned with famous Herend motifs.

Also reported by DNH at the time, the celebration after last year’s Hungarian Grand Prix was a memorable one. Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, and Sergio Pérez finished in the top three during the race, and as the usual post-race champagne parade began, Norris accidentally knocked Verstappen’s Herend porcelain first-place trophy to the ground, shattering it into pieces. The trophy was handmade by 30 people over six months and had an estimated value of EUR 40,000.

After the incident, the McLaren team apologised to Verstappen, and the Herend Porcelain Manufactory offered to replace the broken prize. Fortunately, it seems that there is no bad blood between Lando Norris and the Manufactory. The celebration gone awry last year has now brought a fruitful relationship.

Herend Porcelain Manufactory teams up with Lando Norris

As Bors writes, before this year’s Hungarian Grand Prix, Norris arrived in the country early to visit the Herend Porcelain Manufactory. Attila Simon, CEO of the Manufactory, said that the McLaren driver was shown around the building and the various stages of manufacture, and even tried his hand at porcelain painting.

The visit was obviously a success, so much so that Simon jokingly said,

“Lando passed his test very well, I offered him a job at the porcelain factory and he didn’t say no!”

As he pointed out, on a more serious note, “There was a long lead-up to this meeting. Herend has been the supplier of trophies to the Hungarian Grand Prix for many years. Lando is a serious favourite for the race. We are confident that the trophy will be in his hands this year.”

“You always have to look on the bright side of everything,” Simon added, referring to the accidental trophy-smashing of last year, continuing “Herend Porcelain is a value-creating community.”

That is why this year, the McLaren driver will be wearing a one-of-a-kind, hand-painted helmet for the Grand Prix. Attila Simon said that eight months earlier, Lando Norris’ manager approached Herend Porcelain Manufactory with the idea of creating a helmet for the driver. The final look was selected from a number of designs and, as Attila Simon said, it shows “that an unusual event can turn into a value-creating relationship.”

“The whole idea obviously came from last year, in trying to make up for what happened,” Norris told reporters, continuing “and show my respect also, because I’m a big fan and I respect a lot the design, the time, and the effort that everyone does to create something so special.”

The joint work went well, with Norris saying, “We were able to create something with this helmet that has a real meaning, a message. It’s always very important to a driver what kind of helmet they are racing in. Thank you very much to the Herend family for this helmet.” Then, he added, “And next week I will start my work here!”

According to the Herend Porcelain Manufactory, the pattern of the Helmet was inspired by the “Hungarian motifs” (“Motifs Hongrois”) décor with the elements of Transylvanian embroideries of the 15th-17th centuries, supplemented with bee, bird, and butterfly motifs that are iconic to the manufactory. The artwork was hand-painted with a needle-point brush, over countless hours. The final result is a truly stunning work of art.

On social media, Norris wrote: “Honour to team up with @herendporcelain on this hand-painted masterpiece for Hungary. When we got together we knew we wanted to do something special and here it is. From the bottom of my heart thank you (and sorry about last year).”

After the race on Sunday, the unique helmet will be signed by Lando Norris and auctioned off with the proceeds donated to charity.

Prices at the Hungaroring: Outrageously expensive or the cheapest in Europe?

The Hungarian Grand Prix weekend of Formula 1 has begun with fans arriving from all over the globe, and along with them, a heat wave that is raging across the country. However, if attendees want to cool down with a drink during the races, they will have to dig deep into their pockets. Visitors from Hungary and abroad had their say on the prices at the Hungaroring. Some prefer to bring food from home, while others say the track is by far the cheapest in Europe.

Some may feel the weekend costs an arm and a leg

“Our reader encountered staggering prices at the Hungarian Grand Prix of Formula 1,” begins a recent article from Pénzcentrum, which takes a look at the prices of the Hungarian Grand Prix. Readers sent the news portal pictures of the situation at the race weekend’s venue, and indeed, as the portal writes, the event is not for those on a tight budget.

The photos show that 3.3 decilitres of beer costs HUF 1,650 (EUR 4,22), while half a litre costs HUF 1,950 (EUR 4,99). Those who do not drink are slightly better off, as a can of non-alcoholic lemon Gösser sells for HUF 1,250 (EUR 3.20).

To get some food with the refreshments, one will have to dig even deeper. At one of the vendors photographed, a sausage with bread costs HUF 5,500 (EUR 16 – as calculated by the vendors), a double patty burger is HUF 5,400 (EUR 16), and a chicken burger goes for HUF 5,200 (EUR 15). One serving of grilled chicken breast with bread and pickles is HUF 4,950 (also calculated by the vendor to be EUR 15). A portion of French fries costs HUF 1,900 (EUR 6), a slice of bread is HUF 400 (EUR 1.5), while a portion of sauce (ketchup, mayo, or mustard) is HUF 500 (EUR 1.5).

As Pénzcentrum points out, the conversion of the prices from HUF into EUR is also peculiar, as the exchange rate used by the vendor appears to be slightly different from the official rates. According to the paper’s calculations, the restaurant uses an exchange rate of around 350 forints.

At another booth at the Hungaroring, shown in a video by Blikk, the exchange rate is slightly different, with 1 euro costing approximately 375 forints. At that location, a bottle of water or a soft drink sets you back HUF 1,500 (EUR 4), while a beer is HUF 2,000 (EUR 5,5). A Magmum ice cream sells for HUF 2,000 (EUR 5,5), and if attendees would like a pick-me-up, they can buy an espresso for HUF 1,000 (EUR 3).

Blikk spoke to two vendors about their prices, asking if inflation had made it necessary to raise prices. Both vendors said that they had not raised prices this year. In the video, Blikk’s reporter also talked to some fans coming to the Grand Prix, asking their opinions on the prices at the Hungaroring. One Hungarian visitor laughed and said, “Ah, everything is very expensive! So I packed with me as many sandwiches as I could, and as much water as I could.”

Prices at the Hungaroring are not too high from a foreigner’s perspective

Tourists interviewed by Blikk, on the other hand, said that the prices at the Hungaroring are totally acceptable. One Englishman, for example, asserted that “Hungarian prices are very good, the best in Europe.” A group from the Netherlands told the magazine that they find the prices at the Hungarian Grand Prix nice and that food and drinks are “not that expensive.”

Two fans from Germany were on a similar opinion, saying “In general, compared to the other countries, it’s amazing. It’s pretty cheap. […] We looked at other grand prix prices and really, in comparison, [the Hungarian Grand Prix] was the most affordable with the things you get for the price.” Tourists from the Czech Republic thought the same, expressing their pleasant surprise at how inexpensive the Formula 1 weekend has been so far, and also how economical Budapest has been for them on the whole.

Not all Hungarian visitors were unhappy with the prices at the Hungaroring either, with one man telling Blikk that he did not think the food and drinks were outrageously expensive. If someone takes the trouble to come out for the weekend, the prices are suitable. Another Hungarian woman expressed a similar view, comparing the prices to nightclubs.

A third woman, also from Hungary, said the tickets for the weekend were also affordable, although she added that they were affordable “for some.”

EU presidency: sports officials discuss large sporting events at Budapest meeting

The Hungarian EU presidency has started work in the area of sports with a two-day meeting of sports directors of the European Union in Budapest focusing on the heritage of great sports events and sports as a way of promoting healthy living.

Ádám Schimdt, the state secretary for sports, in his opening speech thanked the Spanish and Belgian presidencies for their work and pledged the Hungarian presidency’s determination to build on their achievements.

Schmidt noted that Hungary is experienced in organising large sporting events, and the government felt it was important “to look at the long-term effects of those events in society”. Meanwhile, the government sees nurturing health through sports as important an issue as elite sports, and has launched a programme to promote community sports, a ministry statement quoted him as saying.

Georg Haeusler, the Director for Culture, Creativity and Sport in the European Commission greeted the meeting on behalf of the commission. Former President Pal Schmitt, honorary member of the International Olympic Committee, introduced the panel discussions.

The panel discussion on the social effects of large sports events was held with the participation of Ágnes Ancic-Valkai of Hungary’s International University Sports Association (MEFS), Lilla Szijj of the Hungarian Olympic Committee, Anita Urr, secretary general of the Hungarian Paralympic Committee, Gábor Schmidt, a deputy state secretary of the defence ministry, and Sándor Wladár of the Hungarian Swimming Federation.

Addressing another panel, Márton Gyulai, the sports director of World Athletics, talked about the effect of large sports events on the economy, community building and on promoting healthy lifestyles.

We are now a few months into the 2024 British flat racing season, and the Classics have dominated the headlines. At the time of writing, we have witnessed four of the five major races — with the 2000 and 1000 Guineas taking place at Newmarket in May and the Oaks and the Derby both playing out at Epsom. 2000 Guineas – Notable Speech

The Guineas meeting at Newmarket is the official start of the flat racing season in Britain, and the 2000 Guineas is a fantastic way to raise the curtain on the campaign.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained City Of Troy was the heavy favourite for the race after being crowned the champion two-year-old last year, but he flattered to deceive when finishing ninth of 11 runners.

Instead, the 2000 Guineas went to Godolphin and Charlie Appleby for a second time as 16/1 chance Notable Speech reigned supreme.

The three-year-old was unbeaten in his three races in the build-up to the 2000 Guineas, but there were concerns surrounding that form due to all those wins being on the all-weather.

Notable Speech cast any doubt aside by running on to beat Rosallion by over a length.

1000 Guineas – Elmalka

There was another shock upset on Guineas weekend at HQ, as Elmalka won the fillies’ version of the Classic from 28/1.

Fallen Angel was the 100/30 favourite after a strong campaign as a juvenile but was back in eighth when the 1000 Guineas unfolded at the finish line.

Nonetheless, it was a thrilling conclusion to the contest as Elmalka, under an expert ride from Silvestre De Sousa, kept on well inside the final strides to win.

There was just one length separating the first five over the line, with Porta Fortuna beaten by just a neck and closely followed by Ramatuelle, Tamfana and Ylang Ylang.

The Oaks – Ezeliya

Following the same trend as the Guineas, the favourite once again failed to deliver in the Oaks at the end of May.

Ylang Ylang was expected to come on from her Newmarket performance and was as short as 11/8 for the Oaks.

However, the O’Brien-trained horse could fair no better than sixth and was over nine lengths off the pace.

The honours ultimately went to Ezeliya, securing Irish handler Dermot Weld his second Oaks success over 40 years after his maiden triumph in the race back in 1981.

The Derby – City Of Troy

While Ylang Ylang couldn’t bounce back for Ballydoyle in the Oaks, her stablemate City Of Troy righted his wrongs from the 2000 Guineas in the Derby.

Faith was restored in the three-year-old in the market ahead of the Epsom showpiece as he was priced as the 3/1 favourite, and it was an epic performance from the Coolmore star.

Held up in the rear by Ryan Moore in the early stages, City Of Troy was ridden into the lead two furlongs out, and he stormed to a comfortable victory over Ambiente Friendly.

It was a record 10th victory in the race for O’Brien, and an almost identical repeat of last season, when Auguste Rodin bounced back from his Guineas blowout to win the Derby for Ballydoyle.

Euro 2024: Headlines from the round of 16

Ivan Schranz gave the 45th-ranked team in the world the lead in the 25th minute and Slovakia were on the cusp of a historic victory and their first quarter-final appearance at the Euros before Jude Bellingham scored a stunning overhead kick with England’s first shot on target in the 95th minute.

That took the wind out of Slovakia’s sails and the momentum shifted going into extra-time as it took the Three Lions’ talisman Harry Kane just one minute to head in what would ultimately be the winning goal.

Dominant Dutch see off Romania

The Netherlands have a squad littered with star talent, yet they are considered merely outsiders to win the European Championships.

However, their dominant victory over Romania deserves rave reviews and is perhaps an indication that Ronald Koeman’s side needs to be taken more seriously in Germany.

Cody Gakpo opened the scoring for the Dutch in the 25th minute, and despite numerous chances to extend their lead, the game wasn’t put to bed until late on when substitute Donyell Malen scored a brace.

Diving Diogo Costa sends Portugal into the last eight

By this stage, we all know that Cristiano Ronaldo loves being front and centre at both club and international level.

That’s why the 39-year-old was left in tears on the pitch and at half-time in extra-time when his penalty was saved by Slovenian keeper Jan Oblak.

Ronaldo did convert from the spot in the preceding shoot-out, but he was by no means Portugal’s hero as Diogo Costa saved all three of Slovenia’s attempts to book his nation’s place in the last eight.

Spectacular Spain spare their blushes against Georgia

Spain were infamously knocked out of the 2022 Qatar World Cup by underdogs of the tournament Morocco in the round of 16 ,and it looked like La Roja were going to suffer a similar feat when dark horses Georgia took the lead inside 20 minutes.

However, Luis de la Fuente has transformed Spain into a swashbuckling side and they came back to win convincingly.

Rodri got them on level terms before half-time and second-half goals from Fabian Ruiz, Nico Williams and Dani Olmo sealed a comfortable 4-1 win.

Tricky Turkey upset Austria

The upset of the round of 16 came in Austria vs Turkey, as Vincenzo Montella’s side stunned Ralf Rangnick’s men to progress to the quarters for the first time.

Austria had been one of the standout teams of the group stage having topped Group D containing France, the Netherlands and Poland, but all their hard work came undone in a 2-1 defeat.

Turkey were 3/1 in places to win the game in the EURO 2024 winner bets. However, two goals from Merih Demiral gave them a comfortable advantage and Turkey held on to secure the win..

Hungarian striker Barnabás Varga returns home after serious injury against Scotland at Euro 2024

The Hungarian striker Barnabás Varga was admitted to hospital after a horror facial injury against Scotland on Monday, 24 June 2024. However, he was released from the hospital on Wednesday after successful surgery and headed home with his partner.

Barnabás Varga was involved in a collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn and fell on his face, which caused fractures in his facial bones.

The striker fell on the ground after the nasty collision while the goalkeeper was coming to collect the cross. The fellow players, including the Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai, immediately yelled for a stretcher and medical staff.

The players covered him with the sheet as he received treatment for almost seven minutes on the field. It looked nervous all around, and Szoboszlai was almost in tears.

Varga was sent to the hospital after the initial assessment and treatment, where doctors suggested surgery. After successful surgery, Varga was released from the hospital on 24 June.

“Thank you for many messages of support. It’s good to be home again. Now comes a few weeks of rest. After that, I’ll focus on my recovery. I’ve looked back on the incident. I’m not the scary type,” said the striker, as highlighted on Ferencváros’ website.

The Hungarian Football Federation posted on X confirming his return, “Barnabás Varga was released from hospital this morning in Stuttgart and is currently recovering in his home in Hungary.”

Reaction From the Captain and Team

Hungary players and captain immediately went for Varga’s help and were not happy with the delayed reaction from medical staff. The captain Szoboszlai even called for a change to medical protocols after the game.

“It looked bad, it was bad, he felt bad,” Dominic Szoboszlain told the reporters while reflecting on Barnabás’ injury. “I don’t really know what the protocol is, but if our doctors say we need immediate help, I don’t think they should be walking.”

“It’s not my decision, but something needs to be changed. Even if somebody is on the ground and you see it was a big crash, then just go on the field. Even if the referee is stopping, just go on. And if you see nothing is serious, you can just go down, and it’s finished. But seconds can help a lot,” Dominic continued.

The captain and players showed whole-hearted support to their teammate during his treatment and even after he went to the hospital. Dominik Szoboszlain wore Varga’s jersey back to front and Csoboth paid tribute to him by holding his jersey during his celebration.

How Did the UEFA React?

UEFA, the European soccer governing body, released the official statement regarding Varga’s injury, said, “With regards to the medical intervention following the head injury of Hungary striker Varga, we would like to clarify that the intervention of the team doctor happened within 15 seconds of the injury, followed by second stadium doctor, to conduct the first assessment of the injury and provide the treatment, as per the customary medical procedure.”

“The qualified team was waiting on the pitch side, according to their protocol, and arrived on the pitch as soon as their intervention was requested by the medical staff to take the player for his immediate transfer to hospital.”

“The coordination between the medical staff on the site was professional, and everything was done according to the applicable medical procedure. There was no delay in the treatment and assessment of the player.”

Speaking of the horrible incident after the match, Angus Gunn also told the BBC, “It was a bit of a blur. I thought I had to come in, and I thought I had done well. It was painful, and hopefully, the guy is okay. I can’t remember much about it.”

Hungary’s Euro 2024 Campaign

Despite winning against Scotland with the help of Kevin Csoboth’s 100th-minute strike, the Hungarian side is out of the tournament. Although the different players of the team have domestic or league trophies, their major trophy drought continues.

The players can still hold their heads after grabbing three points in the group stage, one more than their last Euro Cup. However, they would regret a missed opportunity against Germany.

They were in the contest until the last group F matches but slipped to 5th in the third-place rankings as Georgia defeated Portugal 2-0. They then had a worse goal difference than Slovenia, which eliminated them from the tournament.

“It was a disadvantage that Hungary was in the first group to finish their matches, so other teams already knew exactly what was required of them before their own last match,” said the Hungarian Football Federation.

Minister announced great Hungarian success from New York!

The General Assembly of the United Nations has adopted a Hungarian initiative with a full consensus to mark World Fair Play Day on May 19 each year, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on Facebook from New York on Tuesday.

“Today has started with a great Hungarian success,” the minister wrote, adding that 92 UN members had joined and co-authored the Hungarian proposal, “making a symbolic commitment and signalling their full support for our initiative”.

He said the initiative was backed by a “global coalition”, including China, the US, Germany, South Korea, Indonesia, Argentina, and the United Arab Emirates.

The Hungarian initiative “promotes an approach to reinforce sportsmanship and the values it represents, such as abiding by the rules, respecting the adversary and combatting violence and doping,” Szijjártó said.

Referring to the peace-promoting role of the Olympic Games, Szijjártó said: “We want the whole world to remember … when athletes hugged after a competition even when they came from countries at war with each other.”

“With less than three weeks before the 33rd Summer Olympics, it is no exaggeration to say that this has been the greatest demonstration globally of support for the independence of sports and against the tendency of the world falling into blocs again … and all this is associated with us Hungarians,” Szijjártó said.

After 16 years, the Red Bull Soapbox (in Hungarian: Ládaderbi) returned to Budapest, and on Sunday, more than 20,000 people came to see the crazy cars and the self-driven, tuned cars. We show you the best moments.

On 30 June, a five-man jury judged the performances and the drivers’ achievements. Among the finalists were actress Evelin Dobos and Olympic kayaker Sándor Tótka, as well as Csaba Kajdi, Alexandra Stana and Zoltán Szujó. Points were also awarded for the aesthetics of the vehicle, the performance before the race and the time it took the vehicle to roll down the race course on the slope of Tabán.

First place went to the Purman team, which raced an igloo around the track. The Paper Dogs were the second fastest team over the distance, with TeamEmergencyRacing in third place with a car made from a hospital bed.

“It was interesting that there were as many judges as there were judges, each with a different opinion. It was unusual for me to be in the judging seat, but I will remember it as a great experience. I really enjoyed scoring the creative tasks, but the performance and the choreography were the most important for me ,” said Alexandra Stana.

Zoltán Szujó was also captivated by the competitive spirit and said that, in a sense, the Ládaderbi is comparable to all serious car races – obviously handled in the right way – because you have to make the most of a set of rules that apply to everyone and the best wins.

“There have been surprises and surprises. There was a car that I didn’t think would make it to the first corner, but it went quite nicely. The design of the center of gravity was very interesting, by the way – there were high structures, but at the same time, the center of gravity was very low. Which is an advantage of this form of racing. And there were some things that I would have expected a little bit more from, because there were technical things under the chassis that maybe could have done a little bit more,” added Szujó.
