A parliamentary committee investigating the use of public funds by Hungary’s central bank has summoned former governor György Matolcsy and current governor Mihály Varga for questioning.
Former and current NBH governors to appear before committee
A parliamentary committee investigating alleged abuses surrounding the operation of the National Bank of Hungary (NBH) has decided to summon former governor György Matolcsy and current governor Mihály Varga.
The ad hoc committee voted unanimously to summon Matolcsy, who headed the central bank between 2013 and 2025. The decision to summon Varga, who succeeded Matolcsy as governor in 2025, was approved with five votes in favour, no votes against and one abstention.
The committee’s chairman, Attila Csőszi of the governing Tisza Party, said the decisions would formally require both men to appear and give oral testimony. The next committee meeting is expected to take place in three to four weeks. Csőszi told state news agency MTI that the committee plans to question Matolcsy and Varga on several occasions.

Committee requests data from NBH foundation
The committee also voted to request data from the Pallas Athene Domus Meriti Foundation, one of the foundations established by the central bank. The request was approved with five votes in favour, one abstention and no votes against.
The parliamentary committee was established to examine the use of public funds and alleged abuses linked to the operation of the NBH. Its work is expected to focus on the central bank and entities connected to it.

Several former officials already questioned
The committee has already begun questioning figures connected to the NBH case. On Thursday, it spent more than three hours questioning Erik Bánki and Lajos Kósa. The committee has previously said that it intends to identify and summon the key figures involved in the case. Further hearings are expected to include Matolcsy’s son, Ádám Matolcsy, among others.
Matolcsy served as NBH governor from 2013 until 2025. Varga was Hungary’s economy minister from 2013 to 2018 and finance minister from 2018 to 2024 before taking over as central bank governor in 2025.
