Church built with Hungarian assistance inaugurated in Iraq

Tristan Azbej, state secretary in charge of the Hungary Helps programme, attended the inauguration of a church built in Iraqi Kurdistan with assistance from the Hungarian government’s scheme, on Wednesday.

The Hungarian government’s support “lends hope to Assyrian Christians to start over again”, the state secretary told MTI by phone.

At the inauguration ceremony, Azbej read out a letter from the Hungarian prime minister, in which Viktor Orbán voiced his government’s commitment to protecting Christian communities and culture.

The ceremony was attended by Mar Gewargis III, Catholicos-Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East, and other religious leaders.
