A cold front will sweep across Hungary on Monday, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms as well as a significant drop in temperatures – although the eastern part of the country will have to wait until Tuesday for the cooler weather.

After another hot and predominantly dry weekend, a noticeable change in the weather is on the way. According to HungaroMet, the cold front will reach Hungary from the northwest on Monday.

The first significant drop in temperatures will be felt in Transdanubia and the central counties, while the Great Plain will remain hot, with temperatures still reaching around 35°C in several places. By Tuesday, however, cooler air will have reached the eastern parts of the country as well.

The front will also bring scattered showers and thunderstorms, although rainfall will not be widespread. Some areas could therefore see the front pass through with little or no rain.

Temperatures could fall by more than 10 degrees

HungaroMet forecasts temperatures of 12–23°C in the early hours and 27–36°C in the afternoon on Monday.

On Tuesday, the change will become much more pronounced, with morning temperatures expected to range from 11–17°C, while afternoon highs will reach only 23–28°C.

This means that some parts of Hungary could experience a drop of more than 10 degrees compared with the hottest days of the weekend.

Sunday will remain hot and dry

There will be little sign of the approaching change on Sunday for most of the day. The weather is expected to remain predominantly sunny, dry and hot, with only a few temporary clouds developing over eastern and north-eastern areas.

Clouds will increase from the northwest in the late afternoon and evening, however, accompanied by a growing chance of showers and thunderstorms.

Sunday’s daytime temperatures are expected to reach 32–37°C, while overnight lows will generally be between 12 and 19°C. Temperatures could be several degrees lower in sheltered, cooler areas and higher in larger cities and near bodies of water. The southerly wind will also strengthen in places, particularly as the front approaches.

The heat will therefore continue through Sunday, but Monday will mark the beginning of a significant change, with cooler conditions spreading across the country before reaching the east on Tuesday.
