According to origo.hu, the Hungarian Olympic Committee (MOB) voted for applying for the 2024 Olympics. Budapest has to say yes, but according to Mayor Istvan Tarlos it won’t be a problem. According to Péter Oszkó, it’d be worth financially, while István Kovács Kokó says it would be good for happiness.
The MOB supports the organization of the 2024 Olympics by Budapest and the submission of the application of the Memorandum – Zsolt Borkai, President of MOB announced on Wednesday. The Assembly, whose more than 50% of the members were present, voted for unanimously, without abstentions and no votes against.
According to that, the MOB proposes the Assembly of Budapest to support the Memorandum and to empower Istvan Tarlós to submit the application on behalf of the capital with MOB.
The General Assembly heard the feasibility study report which says “the Olympic Games in Budapest viable and profitable enterprises, the Hungarian application has a chance”. The Mayor said the capital will most likely support the proposal unanimously.
István Tarlós thinks the government will also support the proposal.
According to origo.hu, businessman Peter Oszko, former finance minister of the Bajnai government said the study is a very thorough work. He thinks the timing is very important, and the date 2024 could help the case of the Olympics much. The Agenda 2020 is invented for this case, and Hungary is on a 10-15 development track that it will be ready for the organization of Olympics by 2024 – Oszkó said.
The former minister said this investment is worth for the money. It pays for itself, since it creates workplaces and also contributes to the overall economic development. Otherwise: if we spend HUF 774 billion and there will be HUF 1100 billion revenue, it is wort it – Oszkó said.
He also emphasized that for this, an average 3% GDP growth will be needed for the next 11 years.
István Kovács Kokó said the organization of the Olympics would give the country self-confidence and happiness. It is the key for the physical and spiritual ascension of Hungary, he said.
Tamas Gyárfás, President of the Hungarian Swimming Association said Hungary has to apply, and if it doesn’t win, it should apply again.
Antal Kovacs 1992 Olympic-winner judo player said it would be a shame not to use the possibilities of Agenda 2020. Hungary is the only country among the IOC founders and the 10 most successful countries at Olympics which hasn’t organized Olympics so far. He also said it can be organized by the help of the neighboring countries, which is also possible under Agenda 2020.
