Eger to be the next European Capital of Culture?
Twelve years before, Pécs won the title of the European Capital of Culture. Now Eger has the chance to win, Szeretlekmagyarország.hu reports.
This day last year, the Mayor of Eger had announced his intention to designate Eger for the title. The background works have been started, including a strategic agreement between the municipality and Eszterházy Károly University, Szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu tells.
In 2023, the title can be borne by a town in the UK and in Hungary. Cooperating with an independent panel of cultural experts appointed by the European Union, the Hungarian Ministry of Human Capacities chooses the town that might have a good chance to bear the title.
Szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu informs that every candidate town must have a cultural project with a strong European dimension. Hungary has to inform the European Parliament, the European Council and the Committee of the Regions about the designation at least four years before the title is given. Besides recommending a town for the title, the panel is also entitled to decide which town would receive the Melina Mercouri prize of 1,5 millions of forints.
Apart from Eger, candidate towns include Debrecen, Gödöllő, Miskolc, Tokaj and Veszprém.
