Election cttee rejects investigation of ballots found in Romanian waste dump

2022 Hungarian parliamentary election Hungary

The Hungarian Election Committee (NVB) on Sunday said that it had no jurisdiction in Romania, so it could not investigate the case of Hungarian mail-in votes found at a waste dump near Targu Mures (Marosvásárhely), in western Romania.

Hungarian lawmaker Ákos Hadházy turned to the Committee saying that the burnt election papers found at the waste dump were postal ballots for the Hungarian elections that had already been filled out. At his hearing in front of the committee, Hadházy called on the NVB to annul all mail-in votes and repeat the election.

If the NVB cannot ensure the security of the election across the borders, the procedure should be repeated and the committee should resign, Hadházy said. The NVB rejected

Hadházy’s objection with 9 votes for and 4 against.

The NVB has no jurisdiction in Romania and cannot conduct investigations there, according to the decision.

The National Election Office (NVI) filed a police complaint after reports of the case were published. NVI head Attila Nagy said at the meeting that the NVI has received 225,000 mail-in votes so far. Commenting on the NVB’s decision, Richárd Barabás, spokesman of the opposition Párbeszéd party, said: “Who, if not the NVB, has jurisdiction over the elections in Hungary which are being organised with the inclusion of mail-in votes?”
