Scandalous: Hungarian embassy staff dismissed following leaked video of Bolsonaro’s hideaway

The diplomatic scandal concerning former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonar continues. He spent two nights at the Hungarian Embassy in Brasília, the country’s capital, amidst mounting concerns about potential arrests, given ongoing criminal probes implicating his close associates and himself. Two employees were promptly dismissed by the Hungarian embassy without determining the identity of the perpetrator.
Oddly, the Hungarian media remained oblivious to the latest developments, with CNN Brasil breaking the story. As per their report, shared by the Hungarian outlet 444.hu, the Hungarian Embassy in Brasília terminated two staff members in connection with the Bolsonaro leak.
CNN Brasil noted the embassy’s failure to provide an explanation or conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter. The dismissed employees had access to the monitors displaying the incriminating videos.

Hungarian embassy fired every suspect without identifying the actual perpetrator
Following the outbreak of the scandal, the embassy initiated an internal probe to find out how the leaked footage reached the press. Investigations pointed towards Brazilian employees. Despite multiple interview requests, CNN Brazil received no response from the Hungarian Embassy or Hungarian Ambassador Miklós Halmai.

Bolsonaro, in a statement to the Brazilian Metropoles following the leaked videos, admitted:
“I won’t deny that I’ve been to the embassy… I won’t tell you where else I’ve been. I am friends with some heads of state who are concerned about me. I talk to them about matters of interest to our country. Period. The rest is speculation.”

Bolsonaro’s stint at the Hungarian Embassy in Brasília ensued after Brazilian authorities confiscated his passport and detained two former aides on allegations of plotting a coup following Bolsonaro’s electoral defeat. Surveillance footage from CCTV cameras uncovered his stay, which you can watch below:
Interestingly, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed solidarity by sharing a supportive tweet featuring himself and Bolsonaro greeting each other in Brazil:
An honest patriot. Keep on fighting, Mr. President! @jairbolsonaro pic.twitter.com/5mmmIAGGC3

This episode isn’t the first instance of Bolsonaro’s apparent escape from Brazil; following his electoral defeat, he fled to Florida for three months.
Jair Bolsonaro faces an array of accusations, including attempts to undermine the rule of law, involvement in political violence and conspiracies against the government. Additionally, he has been implicated in trafficking national monuments abroad and falsifying vaccine data.
