While others try to lower their costs by closing for short periods or lowering the temperature, Tilos a Tilos restaurant decided to expand the menu and even offer cheaper dishes.
The Tilos az Á was a legendary entertainment venue in the heart of Budapest’s 8th district. It got its name from a Winnie-the-Pooh reference, and its basement was the place for many alternative concerts. It closed in 1995.
Today on its place Tilos a Tilos restaurant can be found. It opened three years ago, and the opening was in the winter season. This was an unfortunate timing, and the costumers rarely came.

By the time things would have finally settled, the war broke out and the energy prices skyrocketed, and together with the inflation the cost rose. Mihály Nemes, managing director of Tilos a Tilos told ATV that the restaurant’s utilities will cost millions more.

They do not plan to close for now, like many places had to do. They also plan to keep their visitors nice and warm and not save on the heating. Mihály Nemes also thinks raising prices would not be a solution, as he said, “a 30-40 percent raise would be reasonable, but the costumers will not be able to handle this, and we also have a lot of university students. I don’t think that people now have 30-40 percent more money”.
Their idea is to add more things to their menu. Smaller, tapas-like portions, that are cheaper. They would be under HUF 900 (EUR 2.22). This way costumers can buy something to go with their beer for a lower price. The management of the restaurant is aware of the significant business risk of the decision, but they are confident that the change will be successful. Because if not, they will probably have to close.
