Europe is soon to be open to young Hungarians again, Zoltán Tarr, the Tisza Party’s deputy leader who also heads its European Parliament delegation, said in a post on Facebook on Monday. “We are restoring access to the Erasmus-plus programme for every young Hungarian!”
Tarr, who is set to lead the social relations and culture ministry, added that last week, during the plenary session, MEPs approved a reinforced budget for the next Erasmus-plus funding period, now totalling 47.4 billion euros — over 6 billion euros more than the original proposal.
“But there is even more important news for Hungarian students and academics: we are finally closing a dark chapter. With the change of regime in Hungary, we have broken with the Fidesz-KDNP methods of blackmail, destruction, and isolation,” he said, adding that Hungary’s credibility would be restored and trust in Europe rebuilt.
“I hope that soon, every Hungarian student will once again have full and unrestricted access to Erasmus! The Tisza government’s negotiators are working to ensure you can take advantage of the opportunities offered by Erasmus as soon as possible,” he wrote.
He added that in recent months, he had worked intensively at European tables to dismantle the barriers that had shut young people out of international opportunities. Now, he said, they were working flat out to remove bureaucratic obstacles as quickly as possible. Their goal is for every young Hungarian — possibly even this year — to regain full participation in the programme, he declared.
“We are giving the future back to Hungarian students, and we are bringing Hungary back to Europe!” Tarr concluded.
