Brussels, February 6 (MTI) – The European Union’s sanctions against Russia have failed both politically and economically, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on the sidelines of a meeting with his EU counterparts in Brussels on Monday.

Brussels has taken the wrong approach in dealing with the challenging situation in Ukraine, Szijjártó told reporters, arguing that sanctions were ineffective.

Besides severely denting Europe, the sanctions have failed in helping to enforce the Minsk ceasefire agreement, he said.

On the subject of Ukraine, Szijjártó said the EU’s refusal to grant the country visa-free status despite its fulfilling all requirements had been “unfair”. He also urged progress on the EU-Ukraine free-trade agreement. It would be genuinely helpful if the EU granted Ukraine the chance to enjoy the free flow of people, goods and services, he added.

    @Peter,
    ‘UNFAIR’? I think treating our people in ‘their’ homeland by banning minority rights such as language and culture schooling is ‘UNFAIR’. If Ukraine wants to ‘play’ in Europe, they better begin to share and respect European cultures in ‘their’ country as well. Otherwise NOBODY cares about them either. I should know, i’m married to one, and she has spent her whole life thinking about herself. I fee like throwing her out with the ‘bath water’ too!

    @Peter
    So here we are months later and look. The Uki’s decided to toss out the teaching of the Hungarian mother language to our ethnics in Unkraine. This is against the international treaties for minorities living abroad in high density. You pushed to have the UKI’s Visa free and now they stabbed us in the back. What next? Still pushing to have them enter the EU as equals??
