Berlin, August 6 (MTI) – Hungary’s foreign minister in an interview to the German daily Passauer Neue Presse published on Thursday said there was no need for a quota on genuine refugees, whom Hungary is willing to receive.
Hungary has always been open to people persecuted in their home country for political or religious reasons and will do the same in the future, Szijjarto said.
It is important to make a distinction between refugees and economic migrants; whereas Hungary has always provided protection to “genuine refugees”, “we cannot accept economic migrants”, he said.
The number of migrants arriving in Hungary has exceeded 100,000, which is the greatest number of arrivals among all European Union countries. As a result, no other solution is left but to build a physical obstacle, he said commenting on the fence being built on the Hungarian-Serbian border.
Hungary is under double pressure because in addition to the migrants arriving from the direction of Serbia, EU regulations enable members to return migrants to Hungary if they have crossed through it.
Commenting on Hungary’s refusal to accept migrants in line with a system of quotas, he said “we say no” because migrants should be taken away from Hungary instead of being sent back there.
