Hungarian Army bomb-disposal experts removed explosives from the Danube embankments near the Raoul Wallenberg Holocaust Memorial Park and the Budapest University of Technology early on Friday, the armed forces’ bomb-disposal unit said.
Earlier reports said a Soviet 203mm concrete-piercing shell from the Second World War and a cannonball believed to date from the 19th century had been found near the Raoul Wallenberg embankment. A German Second World War ammunition container discovered near the university held eight Panzerfaust launching tubes, their Faustpatrone warheads and detonators, MTI wrote.
The unit said the Soviet shell was too corroded to be defused on site. It was therefore taken under police escort to a designated demolition area, where it will be destroyed along with the other explosives.For the operation, Szabadság Bridge and the embankments, university buildings and a petrol station on the Buda side were temporarily closed early on Friday. Police lifted the restrictions and reopened the roads once the operation had been completed.
