Fidesz mayor taken into custody in Hungary

Change language:
The Fidesz mayor of Halásztelek has been taken into custody after prosecutors carried out coordinated searches, seizures and witness interviews across multiple locations in Pest County on Wednesday.
According to the Central Investigative Prosecutor’s Office, two people were questioned as suspects, including the mayor, following a probe into an alleged sham employment arrangement involving a close relative.
While the prosecution statement did not initially name the politician, Hungarian media identified the detained mayor as Barnabás Nagy, who has led Halásztelek and previously worked both at the Hungarian Central Statistical Office and later within the Prime Minister’s Office apparatus.
Relative allegedly paid without doing any work
At the centre of the case is a 70-year-old retired relative who was allegedly placed on the payroll of the Office of the National Assembly despite having no intention of performing any real work, 444.hu writes.
Prosecutors say the employment contract was signed in October 2024 and technically remains active to this day.
Despite allegedly carrying out no duties, the relative is suspected of having regularly collected salary payments and other benefits amounting to HUF 13.345 million (roughly EUR 33,000), part of which was allegedly funnelled back through kickbacks.
Investigators believe the mayor actively helped facilitate the arrangement.
Serious corruption and fraud suspicions
The prosecutor’s office said the mayor was informed of multiple suspicions, including:
- abuse of official position,
- commercial bribery linked to official influence,
- fraud causing significant financial damage,
- and the use of false private documents.
The allegations suggest prosecutors are treating the case not as an isolated administrative irregularity, but as a potentially systematic misuse of public office and parliamentary resources.
The second suspect in the case is being allowed to remain at liberty while the investigation continues.
A politically sensitive case in post-election Hungary
The timing of the case is politically sensitive, coming just days after Hungary’s national election and amid intense scrutiny of public sector appointments made under the outgoing Fidesz-era political system.
Although the investigation concerns an alleged employment scheme rather than municipal decision-making itself, the detention of a sitting Fidesz mayor is likely to start debates over patronage networks and the use of state institutions for political or personal favours.
